Walked up this mountain about 10 years ago but from holiday complex in Las Americas. I had been leaning on a wall taking in the view, when a chap called Peter from the north east said he had tried to climb it the day before but failed. He had tried to go up the gully on the front of the hill. Explained that looking at it he had gone the wrong way about it - should have taken the southern ( I think) ridge as that looked considerably easier. He asked me would I walk up it with him - was somewhat taken aback as was supposed to be on a relaxing break. Anyway agreed to do it - somewhat reluctantly I might add. Anyway met up with him two days later about 8am - and he was wearing a tee shirt sporting the motif ' Great North Run ' - which put him in a somewhat different class to me !!. Always have and still do consider myself a hill stroller

Remember it was quite a really a rough scramble a lot of the way, when gaining height - went from Las Americas across the ridge overlooking the banana plantation and then alongside the aquaduct - filling my hat several times with the cold water and pouring it over my head - fantastic. Biggest problem I had was the cactus spikes kept going through my trainers. It was only when we were less than about 250 feet or so from the summit that we discovered there was a path coming from the way mentioned in the narrative and yes those people with the bath towels on the sun loungers were there before us !!.

The view from the top was stunning especially the pinacle ridge to (from memory) the north. Coming down we used the path for quite some way before going round back to Las Americas. I remember there was an old farmer in a ramshackle collection of huts who came out and started shouting up the mountain and all his goats came to him.

Absolutely splendid day of walking - cactus flowers were a delight as well. Has lived in the memory - but hardly stirred from the poolside for the rest of the holiday.

Well worth the effort
